Overview
Calgary is Alberta's largest city, home to 1.3 million people, and Canada's energy capital — headquarters of the country's oil and gas industry. Situated where the Rocky Mountain foothills meet the Great Plains, it is famous for the Calgary Stampede (the world's largest outdoor rodeo, 10 days each July), hosting the 1988 Winter Olympics, and the dramatic Chinook winds that can raise temperatures by 20°C in a single hour. The Rockies are 80km to the west.

📜 History & Origins
The Blackfoot Confederacy and other First Nations peoples lived in the area for thousands of years. Fort Calgary was established in 1875 by the North-West Mounted Police at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers. The arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883 transformed the fort into a town almost overnight. Oil was discovered at Turner Valley in 1914, but the real transformation came with the Leduc oil discovery in 1947, making Calgary the headquarters of Canada's booming petroleum industry.
