Cairo is Egypt's capital and the largest city in Africa and the Arab world, with approximately 22.6 million people in Greater Cairo as of 2024. It sits on the Nile River just south of the Nile Delta and has been continuously inhabited for over 5,000 years, though its present form was founded in AD 969. The site near the Nile's east bank has been settled since ancient times as Memphis (c.3100 BCE) and Heliopolis. The Arab general Amr ibn al-As founded Al-Fustat as the first Islamic capital of Egypt in 641 CE. Cairo as a distinct city was founded in 969 CE by the Fatimid Caliph al-Mu'izz as a new royal capital, built north of Al-Fustat. It became one of the largest cities in the medieval world and the seat of the Mamluk Sultanate until the Ottoman conquest in 1517.

The east bank rises onto a limestone plateau — Mokattam Hills (190m) — that forms the eastern edge of the city. Western districts extend into the flat Nile Delta alluvial plain. The Giza Plateau to the southwest, where the pyramids stand, is desert limestone at approximately 60m elevation.
