📜 History & Origins
A short-lived settlement was established by Pedro de Mendoza in February 1536 on the Río de la Plata estuary but was abandoned due to indigenous resistance. Juan de Garay re-founded the permanent settlement on 11 June 1580. The city's full original name was Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Ayre — 'Our Lady of the Fair Winds'. Buenos Aires grew to prominence as a major port and was declared capital of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata in 1776.

🎒 Visitor Tip
Buenos Aires is best explored neighbourhood by neighbourhood: San Telmo for antiques and tango, Palermo Soho for cafés and street art, Recoleta for the cemetery and French-style architecture. The city runs very late — dinner at 9pm is early, and milonga tango events start after midnight. Currency exchange is complex given Argentina's economic conditions; research the official rate before travel.
Geography & Climate
Land & Terrain
Surface area and physical characteristics
Situated on the wide, flat western shore of the Río de la Plata estuary on the northeastern edge of the Pampas. The terrain is almost entirely flat, ranging from near sea level to about 25m at its highest suburban point. Several small rivers — the Riachuelo, Reconquista and Maldonado — run through the metropolitan area. The city faces frequent flooding from sudestada winds that push the Río de la Plata waters onshore.
