Overview

Bucharest is Romania's capital and largest city, home to 1.76 million people in the city and 2.2 million in the metro area. Once dubbed the 'Paris of the East' for its Belle Époque boulevards and architecture, the city blends grand Interwar-era buildings with the massive communist-era Palace of the Parliament — the world's heaviest building. Romania joined the EU in 2007 and Bucharest has become a significant IT outsourcing and digital economy hub.

📜 History & Origins

First documented in 1459 in a decree signed by Vlad the Impaler (Vlad III Dracula), who used it as one of his residences. Bucharest became the permanent capital of Wallachia in 1659 and of the unified principalities of Romania in 1862. The city was developed along Parisian lines in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, earning its 'Paris of the East' reputation with grand boulevards and French-influenced architecture. Nicolae Ceaușescu's communist urban renewal in the 1980s demolished large parts of the historic centre to build the Palace of the Parliament and the Boulevard of the Victory of Socialism.

Leisure Highlights

  • /Palace of the Parliament — world's heaviest building, guided tours

  • /National Museum of Art of Romania
  • /Village Museum (Muzeul Satului) — open-air folk architecture

🎒 Visitor Tip

The metro is efficient and cheap. The Old Town (Centrul Vechi) is compact and the best place for evening dining and bars — much cheaper than Western Europe. The Palace of the Parliament is inexplicably vast — take the guided tour to understand the scale of Ceaușescu's ambition. The National Museum of Art of Romania (in the former Royal Palace) has an excellent collection. Herastrau Park and the Village Museum on its shores are a relaxing half-day.

Geography & Climate

🌍

Land & Terrain

Surface area and physical characteristics

Located on the flat Wallachian Plain (Câmpia Română) at approximately 55–90m elevation, drained by the Dâmbovița and Colentina rivers. The terrain is almost entirely flat — there are no hills within the city. The Dâmbovița River was largely canalised in the communist period. The flat, featureless landscape made Bucharest very easy to expand but gives it a sprawling, low-rise character. The Carpathian Mountains are 130km to the north, visible on clear winter days.
