📜 History & Origins

The earliest recorded settlement, called Brosella meaning 'settlement in the marsh', was documented in 695 CE on a small island in the Senne River. Duke Charles of Lower Lotharingia fortified the site around 979 CE. Brussels grew as a major trading and craft city under the Duchy of Brabant from the 12th century and was the prosperous capital of the Spanish Netherlands by the 16th century. Belgium became an independent state in 1830 after the Belgian Revolution, with Brussels as its capital.

Leisure Highlights

  • Grand-Place / Grote Markt (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • Atomium — 1958 World Expo landmark
  • Manneken Pis and the surrounding Old Town
  • Magritte Museum and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts
  • Chocolate and beer shop trail through the city centre

🎒 Visitor Tip

The Grand-Place is genuinely one of Europe's most beautiful city squares — visit it both in daylight and at night. The Metro and tram network cover the city well; a 10-trip card is the most economical option. Eat moules-frites at a brasserie rather than on the tourist strip near Manneken Pis. Belgian beer culture is UNESCO-listed — visit a traditional café rather than a bar chain. The city is very bilingual; French works everywhere in the centre.

Geography & Climate

Land & Terrain

Surface area and physical characteristics

Built on a gentle valley carved by the Senne River, which was culverted underground in the 19th century. The city rises from the lower town (Bas-de-la-Ville) at around 15m elevation to the upper town (Haut-de-la-Ville) at around 60–100m, creating a distinctive low-high split visible from the Grand-Place. The wider metropolitan area sits on the flat Belgian Brabant plateau, with no significant natural relief.
