📜 History & Origins
The Turrbal and Jagera peoples inhabited the area for tens of thousands of years before European contact. Brisbane was established in 1824 as a penal settlement at Redcliffe Point, relocated to the present city site in 1825. Named after Governor Sir Thomas Brisbane, it was opened to free settlers in 1842 and became the capital of the newly separated Colony of Queensland in 1859. Flood-prone and long dismissed as a backwater, Brisbane transformed through the late 20th century — hosting Expo 88 was the turning point that kick-started a generation of investment.
