📜 History & Origins

The Muisca people inhabited the Bogotá savannah — the Sabana de Bogotá — before Spanish arrival. Conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada founded the settlement of Santa Fe de Bogotá on 6 August 1538 on a plateau at the foot of the Monserrate and Guadalupe mountains. The city became the seat of the Viceroyalty of New Granada in 1739, governing present-day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama, and served as capital of Gran Colombia from independence in 1819.

Leisure Highlights

  • Museo del Oro — world's finest pre-Columbian gold collection
  • La Candelaria historic centre — colonial architecture
  • Cerro de Monserrate cable car — city panorama at 3,152m
  • Ciclovía — Sunday cycling event closing 120km of roads
  • Zona Rosa and Parque 93 — nightlife and dining districts

🎒 Visitor Tip

Take a taxi or Uber rather than walking at night in unfamiliar areas — the city's security is vastly improved but awareness still matters. The Ciclovía on Sundays (7am–2pm) shuts major roads to cars and opens them to cyclists and pedestrians — one of the world's great urban events involving over 1.5 million people. The Gold Museum (Museo del Oro) is the finest pre-Columbian collection in the world. Altitude adjustment takes 1–2 days at 2,640m; avoid strenuous activity on day one.

Land & Terrain

Surface area and physical characteristics

Located on the Sabana de Bogotá — a high Andean plateau (altiplano) — at 2,640m above sea level, surrounded by the Eastern Andes Range. The plateau is relatively flat, but the city is backed dramatically to the east by the steep slopes of the Eastern Cordillera, with Monserrate (3,152m) and Guadalupe (3,250m) visible directly above the city. The Bogotá River and its tributaries drain west from the plateau through a deep canyon.
