Berlin is Germany's capital and largest city, home to 3.7 million people in the city proper and 6 million in the wider metro area. Rebuilt and reunified after division by the Cold War Wall from 1961 to 1989, it has become one of Europe's most creative and culturally open capitals — a magnet for startups, art, and a globally renowned electronic music scene.

📜 History & Origins

Berlin emerged in the 13th century from two adjacent settlements: Cölln on an island in the Spree and Berlin on the eastern bank, first mentioned in 1237 and 1244 respectively. It became the seat of the Hohenzollern dynasty (1415), capital of the Kingdom of Prussia (1701), and then of the unified German Empire (1871). The city was devastated in World War II and divided into East and West in 1949; reunification came in 1990 after the Wall fell in November 1989.

🎒 Visitor Tip

The BVG public transport network is excellent — get a day or weekly pass. The best introduction is a walk from Mitte through the Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial, and down to Checkpoint Charlie. Museum Island alone needs a full day; book the Pergamon Museum in advance as it partially reopens in phases. Currywurst from a street stand is non-negotiable. Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg and Neukölln are the best neighbourhoods for evening food and bars.

Geography & Climate

🌍

Land & Terrain

Surface area and physical characteristics

Built on the flat North German Plain at 34m average elevation, traversed by the Spree and Havel rivers and dotted with lakes — the Wannsee and Müggelsee among them. The terrain is entirely flat, a legacy of glacial deposits from the last Ice Age. The city sits in the Berlin-Warsaw Glacial Valley, giving it a wide, open feel unlike hilly European capitals.
