Berlin emerged in the 13th century from two adjacent settlements: Cölln on an island in the Spree and Berlin on the eastern bank, first mentioned in 1237 and 1244 respectively. It became the seat of the Hohenzollern dynasty (1415), capital of the Kingdom of Prussia (1701), and then of the unified German Empire (1871). The city was devastated in World War II and divided into East and West in 1949; reunification came in 1990 after the Wall fell in November 1989.

The BVG public transport network is excellent — get a day or weekly pass. The best introduction is a walk from Mitte through the Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial, and down to Checkpoint Charlie. Museum Island alone needs a full day; book the Pergamon Museum in advance as it partially reopens in phases. Currywurst from a street stand is non-negotiable.
