📜 History & Origins
Bangkok's roots lie in a small trading post and fort on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River during the 15th-century Ayutthaya era. After the fall of Ayutthaya to Burma in 1767, King Taksin briefly established a capital at Thonburi on the west bank. In 1782 King Rama I of the Chakri dynasty relocated across the river to the east bank and founded Rattanakosin as the new capital, which is known today as Bangkok's Old City.

🎒 Visitor Tip
Get a Rabbit Card for the BTS Skytrain and use the MRT metro for downtown; both connect to all major tourist areas. Tuk-tuks are for short trips or photos, not efficient transport. Visit the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew first thing in the morning before the heat and crowds arrive. Dress code is enforced at all temples — no bare shoulders or knees.
Geography & Climate
Land & Terrain
Surface area and physical characteristics
Flat alluvial delta plain formed by the Chao Phraya River, sitting at an average of just 1.5m above sea level. This makes the city highly vulnerable to flooding, which occurs regularly, and to subsidence — Bangkok is sinking at around 1–2cm per year due to groundwater extraction and the weight of buildings on soft delta sediments.
