📜 History & Origins

The Auckland isthmus — Tāmaki Makaurau in Te Reo Māori, meaning 'Tāmaki desired by many' — was heavily settled by Māori for centuries, with pa (fortified villages) on many of the volcanic cones. Governor William Hobson of the new British Colony chose the site as New Zealand's first capital in September 1840, partly for its excellent twin harbours and fertile volcanic soils. The capital was moved to Wellington in 1865 due to its more central location.

🎒 Visitor Tip

AT HOP card works on all trains, buses and ferries — buy one at the airport. The free City Circuit bus loops the central area. Sky Tower (328m) is the fastest orientation to the city. A Waiheke Island ferry (35 minutes) is the most rewarding half-day trip — vineyards, beaches and views of the Hauraki Gulf. The Waitematā and Manukau harbour waterfronts are both walkable and excellent. October–April is the warmest season.

Land & Terrain

Surface area and physical characteristics

Built on a narrow volcanic isthmus — at one point only 2km wide — between the Waitematā Harbour (Hauraki Gulf/Pacific) to the north and the Manukau Harbour (Tasman Sea) to the south. The city is dotted with 53 volcanic cones, many now reserve parklands, rising to 196m at Maungawhau (Mt Eden). The isthmus was formed by basaltic shield volcanism — the Auckland Volcanic Field remains geologically active.
