📜 History & Origins

The site was designated as the terminus of the Western and Atlantic Railroad in 1837 and named Terminus. It was renamed Marthasville in 1843 and finally Atlanta in 1847 — a feminisation of Atlantic, referring to the railroad. Atlanta burned to the ground in September 1864 when General Sherman's Union Army destroyed it during the Civil War. The city rebuilt rapidly and leveraged its rail connections to become the South's dominant commercial hub.

Leisure Highlights

  • Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site (birthplace and church)
  • National Center for Civil and Human Rights
  • Georgia Aquarium — world's largest
  • World of Coca-Cola museum

🎒 Visitor Tip

MARTA rail is the most practical transit; the airport line connects directly to downtown in 20 minutes. The National Center for Civil and Human Rights and Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site are the most important cultural stops and should be done first. The Beltline — a 35km ring trail on old rail lines encircling the city — is the best way to understand Atlanta's neighbourhoods on foot or by bicycle. Georgia Aquarium, the world's largest, is on the same block as the World of Coca-Cola.

Geography & Climate

Land & Terrain

Surface area and physical characteristics

Located in the northern Georgia Piedmont at 320m above sea level — unusually high for a southeastern US city. The terrain is gently rolling with forested ridges typical of the Piedmont region, which sits between the flat Coastal Plain to the south and the Appalachian Mountains to the north. No significant rivers run through the urban core. Tree canopy coverage is unusually high for a US city — Atlanta is sometimes called 'city in a forest.'
