📜 History & Origins

Archaeological evidence confirms continuous habitation of the Athens basin since at least 3000 BCE. Greek mythology attributes the city's founding to the goddess Athena winning a contest with Poseidon for the city's patronage. The Mycenaean palace on the Acropolis dates to around 1400 BCE. Athens emerged as the dominant city-state of ancient Greece by the 5th century BCE and under Pericles (461–429 BCE) built the Parthenon and became the intellectual capital of the ancient world.

  • Ancient Agora of Athens
  • National Archaeological Museum — largest collection of ancient Greek artefacts
  • Monastiraki flea market and Plaka neighbourhood

🎒 Visitor Tip

The Athens Metro is modern, clean and covers the main tourist circuit with bilingual signs. Buy the €30 Acropolis combo ticket online — it covers the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, Kerameikos and several other sites and is valid for five days. Visit the Acropolis in the first hour after opening (8am) before the heat and crowds. The Monastiraki flea market on Sunday mornings is chaotic and excellent. Eat dinner no earlier than 9pm to eat with Athenians rather than tourists.

Land & Terrain

Surface area and physical characteristics

Built in the Attica Basin, a triangular plain surrounded on three sides by mountains — the Parnitha Range (1,413m) to the north, Hymettus (1,026m) to the east and Aigaleo (468m) to the west — and open to the Saronic Gulf to the south. The Acropolis rock (156m) rises abruptly from the flat basin floor and has been the city's focal point for 3,400 years. The Kifissos and Ilisos rivers (now largely culverted) cross the plain.
