📜 History & Origins
Began as a small fishing settlement on the Amstel River, dammed around 1270 — the name literally means 'Dam in the Amstel'. Received city rights around 1300. During the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century, Amsterdam became the world's leading centre of trade and finance, with the Dutch East India Company (VOC) — the first publicly traded company — headquartered here. At its peak in 1700 it was among the world's five largest cities.

Get an OV-chipkaart for trams, metro and buses. The most efficient way to navigate is by tram or bicycle — cycling is taken seriously here so stay in bike lanes when walking. Book the Anne Frank House online at least 4–6 weeks in advance; same-day tickets are rarely available. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are adjacent in Museumplein and both require advance booking in summer.
Geography & Climate
Land & Terrain
Surface area and physical characteristics
Located in the western Netherlands on the IJ Bay, an inlet of the IJsselmeer. The city sits almost entirely below sea level — an average of 2m below the North Sea — protected by an extensive system of dikes, pumps and water management infrastructure. Built on a complex of marshy peat bogs reclaimed from the sea, the ground is soft and unstable, requiring all buildings to be built on wooden or concrete piles. The widest point is barely 5m elevation.
