📜 History & Origins
The Bani Yas tribe — the ancestral clan of the Al Nahyan ruling family — settled on Abu Dhabi island around 1761, having been led there by a gazelle tracked to a freshwater source. The Al Nahyan family has governed Abu Dhabi since that settlement. The city developed significantly after oil was discovered offshore in 1958, and Abu Dhabi became a founding emirate of the UAE on 2 December 1971.
