1886年，梅内利克二世皇帝选择恩托托丘陵气候宜人之地建城，皇后泰图·贝图尔将其命名为"亚的斯亚贝巴"（新花）。1896年阿杜瓦战役大败意大利军队后，埃塞俄比亚以亚的斯亚贝巴为首都确认独立地位。曾短暂被意大利占领（1936至1941年）。1963年，非洲统一组织（今非盟前身）在此正式宣告成立。
